Fresh 48 Photography: What It Is & Why It Matters

Fresh 48 sessions are documentary-style photography sessions that take place within the first 24–48 hours after your baby is born, typically in the hospital or birth center. These sessions focus on connection, emotion, and real moments — not posing or perfection.

I’m writing this not just as a photographer, but as a mom. I didn’t have Fresh 48 photos taken after my own child was born, and it’s something I wish — deeply — that I had. Those first hours go by in a blur, and once they’re gone, there’s no recreating them.

This is why these sessions matter so much to me.

"Do I really need photos that early? I’ll be exhausted. I’ll probably look terrible. Isn’t it kind of… a lot?"

I hear this all the time. And every single time, I smile — because I know what’s coming next.

Me: Totally fair questions. Let me ask you one back… do you remember the feeling of the first few hours after your baby was born?

You: Umm… kind of? It was a blur.

Exactly.

That blur — the shock, the adrenaline, the quiet moments, the tiny details you didn’t even realize you were taking in — that’s why Fresh 48 sessions are some of my very favourite sessions to photograph.

"But I’ll still be in the hospital…"

You: I don’t really want hospital photos though.

Me: I get that. But Fresh 48 photos aren’t about the hospital — they’re about connection.

They’re about:

Your baby’s impossibly tiny fingers wrapped around yours

That sleepy stretch they do without even opening their eyes

The way your partner looks at your baby when they think no one is watching

The way you look at your baby — completely undone and completely in love

The hospital room just happens to be where your baby exists for the very first time.

"I won’t be ready…"

You: I’ll be tired. I won’t have makeup on. I won’t feel like myself yet.

Me: You’re right — you probably won’t feel like yourself.

You’ll feel like a mother.

Fresh 48 sessions aren’t about being polished. They’re about being present. Wrapped in blankets. Hair messy. Baby on your chest. No pressure to perform.

And here’s the truth most moms don’t realize until later: your baby will never care what you looked like. But they will one day treasure seeing how safe they were in your arms.

"What makes these sessions so different?"

You: Okay… but how is this different from newborn photos at home?

Me: Because this version of your baby only exists once.

This is before:

The swelling goes down

The umbilical cord falls off

The first outfit gets stained and washed a hundred times

Visitors start coming and going

Reality settles in

Your baby is still brand new. Still adjusting to the world. Still exactly as they arrived.

And you? You’re standing right at the beginning of one of the biggest transformations of your life.

"So why have someone there?"

You: Can’t we just take a few photos on our phones?

Me: Of course you can — and you should.

But having someone there whose only job is to notice things changes everything.

I’m watching for:

The way your baby curls into you

The soft kisses you don’t realize you’re giving

The quiet moments between feeds

The in‑between glances that happen when no one is posing

You get to stay in the moment. I take care of remembering it.

Why Fresh 48 Sessions Are Some of My Favourite

Because they document something educational research and lived experience both show us: memory is fragile in the immediate postpartum period.

Hormones, exhaustion, adrenaline, and emotion all collide at once. Many moms later realize they remember very little from the first day or two — especially the quiet moments in between feeds, checks, and visitors.

Fresh 48 sessions preserve:

Your baby exactly as they entered the world

Early bonding and skin-to-skin moments

A realistic, honest version of postpartum life

Your first hours as a family

These images become visual memory anchors — something tangible to return to when details fade.

Thinking About a Fresh 48 Session?

If you’re on the fence, this is your sign — and it’s coming from a mom who wishes she had said yes.

You don’t need to be ready. You don’t need to be put together. You don’t need to feel confident in your body yet.

You just need to exist in those first hours.

I’ll quietly document the moments you won’t realize you’ll miss until years later.

Book Your Fresh 48 Session

Fresh 48 sessions are limited each month to allow for flexibility around due dates. If you’re expecting and want to reserve space on my calendar, I recommend booking during your second or early third trimester.
